Portland entered MLS Decision Day needing a win over Austin FC to guarantee a Western Conference playoff spot, with a chance to avoid the wild-card play-in if other results went its way. The Timbers arrived on a three-game winning streak, while Austin was mired in poor form and had already been eliminated from postseason contention. Portland led 1-0 at halftime, according to a live match update. Austin had beaten Portland 2-1 in their earlier meeting this season.
