Pregnant South Carolina woman and unborn son die after hair caught in go-kart

Baylee Johnson, a 24-year-old South Carolina woman who was 15 weeks pregnant, died eight days after her hair became caught in the sprocket of a go-kart during an Aug. 23 accident in Sumter. The incident hyperextended her neck and deprived her brain of oxygen; first responders revived her after finding her without a pulse, but she later died at a Florence hospital. Her unborn son also died, and the family had planned to name him Johnny. Johnson had recently started her dream job as a medical assistant at an OB-GYN clinic and was remembered by loved ones as caring, funny and spontaneous. A funeral was scheduled for Sept. 5, with the family requesting memorial donations to the McLeod Guest House.
