Prosecutor seeks life sentence for US man accused in Rome deaths

An Italian prosecutor has asked for a life sentence, plus three years of daytime solitary confinement, for U.S. citizen Francis Kaufmann, who is accused of killing his partner and their 13-month-old daughter. The two bodies were found in Rome’s Villa Pamphili park last year, and Kaufmann was arrested on the Greek island of Skiathos a week later. Kaufmann, who also used the name Rexal Ford, has pleaded not guilty; the prosecutor cited witness accounts and surveillance footage but did not outline a motive. A first-instance verdict is expected Nov. 5, and Italian law allows two levels of appeal.
