Racine Students Unearth Artifacts From Their Invented Ancient Civilizations

Students at Racine Unified’s NOVA Academy explored archaeology through a hands-on dig at Samuel Myers Park after spending weeks creating imagined ancient civilizations, making artifacts and learning how researchers use evidence to understand the past. They built excavation grids, buried artifacts for classmates to uncover and used clues to identify one another’s civilizations. The activity was part of NOVA’s approach to personalized, self-directed learning and its use of signature events to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences.
