Racine Zoo Welcomes Third Hartmann’s Foal, First Female

The Racine Zoo welcomed a female Hartmann’s mountain zebra foal on Oct. 12, the third of the species born at the zoo and its first female. Born to Promise and Obi through a recommendation from the species’ Species Survival Plan, the foal is considered an important contribution to conservation because Hartmann’s mountain zebras are vulnerable in their native southern African habitats. Zoo staff monitored Promise around the clock during her yearlong pregnancy, and both mother and foal are reported healthy. The zoo plans to introduce the foal to the public soon and is inviting people to vote on her name on Facebook.
