Recalled Broccoli Sprouts Linked to 22-Case Salmonella Outbreak

CDC, FDA and state health officials are investigating a multistate Salmonella Bovismorbificans outbreak linked to recalled broccoli sprouts produced by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts of Moyie Springs, Idaho. At least 22 people in Washington, Idaho, Montana and Utah have become ill, with two hospitalizations and no reported deaths; illnesses began July 7 and continued through Aug. 26. All 19 interviewed patients reported eating sprouts, and 17 specifically reported eating broccoli sprouts, while testing found the outbreak strain in an unopened package collected from a sick person’s home. Consumers, retailers and restaurants should not eat, sell or serve Evergreen Fresh Sprouts broccoli sprouts with expiration dates of Sept. 7, 9, 11, 14 or 16, and should discard or return them. Officials say the outbreak is separate from another recent outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts and that additional cases may be identified as the investigation continues.
