Reentry Events Highlight Second Chances Across Communities
Events in Chicago and Connecticut highlighted the support and opportunities people need to rebuild their lives after incarceration. At Chicago’s fourth annual Justice Ball, formerly incarcerated attendees shared stories of personal transformation, while advocates and state Sen. Lakesia Collins stressed the importance of jobs, housing and family connections. A Connecticut reentry expo connected recently released residents with services including health care, mentorship, education and employment, while attendees described mental health challenges and barriers from employer background checks and landlords’ reluctance. Organizers said many people struggle to connect with available programs, and job seekers may face repeated rejections before finding work. In Malaysia, an assistant minister similarly urged communities and employers to give former inmates a fair chance, arguing that public acceptance and employment can support rehabilitation and reduce the risk of reoffending.
