Blackburn not considering Hegseth for her Tennessee Senate seat, reports say
Tennessee Gov.-elect Marsha Blackburn is not considering Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for the Senate seat she will vacate when sworn in as governor in January, sources close to her say. She defeated Democrat Jerri Green 45.49% to 42.98% with 98.9% counted, per AP, and will appoint her successor. A source told Punchbowl News's Jake Sherman Hegseth "is not being considered," calling the talk "Washington, D.C., spin from a bunch of consultants" and adding "D.C. won't pick the next senator." The Washington Post said Trump has not spoken to Blackburn about appointing him. WHAT'S CONTESTED: Breitbart said White House sources reported Trump was talking with advisers about firing Hegseth; Trump denied it, told reporters Hegseth is "doing a very good job," and spokeswoman Anna Kelly said he "has full confidence in Secretary Hegseth." Democrats' House control raises impeachment prospects. Rep. Tim Burchett wants consideration for the seat. Reports dated November 5, 2026.
