Reports: ICE Detains, Injures Santa Maria Student
A 20-year-old Santa Maria High School student with special needs, identified in reports as a U.S. citizen, was detained by ICE agents while walking to school and released near where he was picked up. The student and people familiar with the incident said agents tackled and restrained him; school staff sent him by ambulance to a hospital, where he underwent surgery for a broken wrist and received treatment for other injuries. ICE confirmed a temporary detention during a targeted operation, saying agents believed the student matched their target, resisted commands and adopted a fighting stance, but was released after his identity was confirmed. The agency disputed reports that he suffered broken bones and said he did not request medical care. School and local officials said the incident was reported to law-enforcement and state agencies, while community advocates and a city council member raised concerns about the use of force and possible racial profiling.
