Spain tightens rules for retiring at 65 in 2027 as US fund nears depletion
Spain’s scheduled 2027 pension-age change will allow retirement at 65 only for workers with at least 38 years and six months of contributions; others generally must wait until 67 and meet minimum contribution rules. In the United States, Social Security’s retirement trust fund is projected to be depleted in 2032, when ongoing revenue would cover about 78% of scheduled benefits unless Congress acts, prompting debate over tax increases and benefit changes. Retirees also face consequential Medicare coverage choices: Medicare Advantage plans may offer lower premiums and extra benefits, while Medigap can provide more predictable costs and broader provider access, but buying Medigap later may require medical underwriting. Some beneficiaries whose Medicare Advantage plans leave their area in 2027 may qualify for a limited period to buy Medigap without underwriting. For people aging into Medicare while still covered by an employer plan, whether they can delay Parts B and D without penalties generally depends on employer size and whether the prescription coverage is creditable; HSA contributions also require special consideration before enrolling in Part A.
