Rhode Island First State to Sue Meta Over Scam Ads

Rhode Island has sued Meta, alleging that Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp tolerated and profited from scam advertising while telling users it was working to protect them. The complaint says Meta’s ad tools sometimes helped scammers and seeks penalties, consumer restitution and a court order requiring the company to address the ads; it cites internal documents indicating high-risk scam ads generated substantial revenue. Rhode Island is the first U.S. state to bring a scam-advertising case against Meta, following a similar suit by California’s Santa Clara County. Meta said it removes scam ads and has introduced user-protection tools, and called the lawsuit unfounded.
