Richmond museum opens Barbie exhibit with Virginia-themed dolls
“Barbie: A Cultural Icon” has opened at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond, where it runs through Jan. 18, 2027. The exhibition features more than 250 dolls and fashion ensembles spanning Barbie’s 1959 debut to the present, alongside historical artifacts, advertising, original designs and interviews exploring the doll’s influence on fashion, media and culture. Visitors can explore immersive displays, including a Dreamhouse setting, oversized Barbie boxes and a pink Corvette. A section created for the Richmond stop showcases six dolls connected to Virginia, including figures representing George Washington, Ella Fitzgerald and cheerleaders from the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. Organizers say the exhibit combines nostalgia and interactive experiences with a historical look at Barbie’s changing careers, identities and growing emphasis on diversity and inclusion.
