Roanoke Seeks $430K to Restore Landmark H&C Coffee Sign
Roanoke’s H&C Coffee sign, a longtime downtown landmark that has been dark for about four years, is slated for restoration by the Historical Society of Western Virginia. The society is raising $430,000 for structural repairs, replacement LED lighting designed to preserve the sign’s familiar neon appearance, and ongoing maintenance; one report puts the restoration work itself at about $220,000. Work is expected to begin later this year, with organizers aiming to relight the sign in 2027 for H&C Coffee’s 100th anniversary. Community leaders and the founder’s family say restoring the coffee-urn sign will preserve a meaningful symbol of Roanoke’s history and identity.
