Russia’s independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta has announced it will shut down after 30 years, with Editor-in-Chief Sergei Sokolov blaming pressure from Russian authorities and security services. The newsroom says it must leave its Moscow office with little time to relocate, while its reader-donation system has also been shut down. The closure follows years of restrictions: the paper halted print publication in 2022 after official warnings, and authorities revoked its media license that year; in September 2026 it was added to Russia’s foreign-agent register. Novaya Gazeta was known for investigative reporting on government abuses and remained an important source for independent and antiwar voices inside Russia.

Losing Novaya Gazeta means even less independent coverage of what's happening in Russia right now.
This closure after 30 years shows how far the Kremlin will go to silence any real opposition in the media.
