Safeway Plans Bay Area Store, Bakery Closures
Safeway plans to close its 57-year-old supermarket on Bollinger Road in San Jose by Nov. 13, and its Richmond bread plant is also slated to shut later this year, affecting 92 employees. Safeway said San Jose store employees will be reassigned to nearby locations; only a limited number of Richmond plant workers may be offered other jobs. The company has not publicly explained either closure, which adds to Safeway’s recent Bay Area store shutdowns and broader changes to its regional footprint. Its parent, Albertsons, is facing weaker sales and planning a business turnaround after its proposed merger with Kroger was blocked.
