San Antonio honors Huerta, California plans tribute
Dolores Huerta, the civil rights leader and United Farm Workers co-founder, died at 96 at her home in Bakersfield on Oct. 28. Community members, labor activists and former colleagues honored her at a candlelight vigil in San Antonio, recalling her role in advancing farmworkers’ rights and her belief that anyone can organize for change. California lawmakers announced that Huerta would lie in honor at the State Capitol on Nov. 16, where members of the public could pay their respects. Her legacy has also been discussed alongside revelations that her organizing partner César Chávez sexually assaulted her; the disclosures prompted cancellations and changes to tributes bearing his name.
