San Diego Committee Advances Plan for 4,254 Homes at Sports Arena Site
San Diego’s Land Use and Housing Committee unanimously advanced the Midway Rising redevelopment proposal for the 48.5-acre Sports Arena site to the full City Council. The plan calls for 2,000 affordable homes, 2,250 market-rate apartments, a new 16,000-seat entertainment venue, parks, shops and restaurants, along with substantial infrastructure work. Committee members also asked city staff to strengthen the agreement so the 2,000 affordable homes must be newly delivered at the site, rather than counted through housing obligations from other projects. The proposal includes a long-term lease and a financing district intended to help reimburse infrastructure costs; the full council will decide whether to approve it.
