San Diego Wave FC beat Bay FC 1-0 in the NWSL regular-season finale, with rookie Mimi Van Zanten scoring in the ninth minute. The win gave San Diego second place, the No. 2 playoff seed and a home quarterfinal against the Utah Royals; the Wave finished with a club-record 18 regular-season victories. Bay ended a disappointing season near the bottom of the standings, with its limited scoring among the reasons it fell well short of a playoff place. San Diego could also host a semifinal if it advances, though a scheduling conflict involving fixed television slots and other events may complicate where that game is played.

A scheduling conflict that might block San Diego from hosting a semifinal feels unfair after they played so well all year.

Bay FC's season was rough from start to finish. Not scoring enough goals left them near the bottom of the standings with little to show for it.
