Satellites Find 70 Methane Plumes at Turkish Landfills
Satellite analysis by UCLA researchers identified 70 methane plumes across 10 of Turkey’s highest-emitting landfill sites, with detected rates ranging from 841 kilograms to 7.4 metric tons per hour. The findings highlight Seymen landfill near Istanbul and other sites near Ankara, Izmir and COP31 host city Antalya; Turkey ranks fifth globally for methane emissions from solid waste, according to Climate TRACE. Although gas from many large landfills is captured to generate electricity, the detected leaks show that collection systems alone are not preventing substantial releases. Experts say cutting emissions will require improving gas capture and diverting organic waste from landfills, while Turkey’s Environment Ministry cautions that intermittent satellite readings cannot establish annual emissions at individual sites and points to increased national waste recovery.
