Seattle Parents Rally, Demand Classroom AI Pause
Seattle Public Schools families called for a pause in classroom use of generative AI, arguing that the district needs clearer rules before the tools become more common in lessons. Parents raised concerns about student privacy, screen time, effects on independent learning and creativity, and whether young children need these technologies. Their requests include paper-based alternatives and device opt-outs, caregiver consent, grade-level screen-time limits, and greater disclosure of which education technology tools collect student data. The district already limits technology use for younger students and blocks some online content, while school board members are reviewing guidance for safe, developmentally appropriate technology and AI use.
