Britt Campaigns for Hinson as Russian Diesel Deal Draws Disagreement
Republican Iowa Senate candidate Ashley Hinson welcomed the Trump administration’s $8 billion farmer relief program but said lowering diesel costs will require further steps, including more U.S. refining capacity. She reiterated opposition to making deals with Russia over diesel imports, despite sharing President Trump’s goal of reducing costs, and said she had not spoken directly with him about the decision. Alabama Sen. Katie Britt campaigned with Hinson in Des Moines, praising her as a stateswoman and arguing that parents’ perspectives are needed in Washington. In a separate bipartisan discussion with Vermont Sen. Peter Welch, Britt highlighted areas where they have worked together but criticized Congress’s failure to address social media’s effects on children; the senators also sharply disagreed over Trump’s proposed Russian diesel deal and sanctions waiver. Hinson is challenging Democrat Josh Turek for Iowa’s open Senate seat.
