Sewer Breaks Disrupt Roads, Close Charleston Greenway
A sewer main break in Charleston’s West Ashley area temporarily closed part of the Greenway between Coburg Road and Farmfield Avenue, with nearby marshes and waterways subject to contamination concerns. Crews repaired the cracked pipe, reopened the trail and said a clamp was installed to stop the leak; environmental advocates warned that sewage spills can expose people to harmful pathogens. Charleston Water System says repeated breaks in the area are linked to weakened, aging pipe and is pursuing infrastructure upgrades, including a sewer tunnel extension. Separately, a sewer main repair in Rapid City has closed the 400 block of Robbins Drive through Friday, while an overnight break shut eastbound Route 28 in downtown Westfield as crews completed repairs.
