Sibley Barn Fire Kills 2,400 Pigs
A hog barn west of Sibley, Iowa, was destroyed in a fire that began late Monday and continued into Tuesday morning, killing about 2,400 pigs. No people were injured, and the building was already fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived. Crews worked to protect nearby propane cylinders and keep windblown embers from igniting a cornfield; Randy Vopel Farms helped by harvesting an adjacent field to create a firebreak. Multiple area fire departments and other local agencies provided mutual aid.
