Singer in hospice performs soulful ‘Landslide’ cover ‘one last time’

Friends came to Marirose Powell’s home and asked what she wanted to sing. She chose Landslide, the song she had performed hundreds of times on stage. A week later she was gone. Powell had spent more than twenty years singing as Stevie Nicks in a Fleetwood Mac tribute band. She also released three solo albums while working as an emergency-room nurse. Music filled every part of her adult life. Breast cancer appeared in 2021. She reached remission, then the disease returned roughly two years later. By early April 2024 she was receiving hospice care at home. In the video her daughter-in-law posted, Powell sits upright in a medical bed and grips the safety rail. She sings the verses about time and change in the same steady voice she had used on stage for decades. Sam Xenos shared the clip on TikTok with a note that this was her mother-in-law’s final performance. Powell died on April 10, 2024, at the age of 62. Her obituary remembered the way she left every person she met better than she found them. Viewers left thousands of comments describing the performance as the most moving version of the song they had heard. Xenos and her husband watched the responses grow and decided to post more recordings of Powell’s earlier shows. The family said the outpouring showed Powell what she had long doubted: that people would care about the music she made. The videos continue to circulate more than a year after her death.
