Six California Work Zone Deaths Spur Caltrans Alert
Caltrans is urging drivers to slow down, move over when safe, and avoid distractions or impaired driving in highway work zones after six contractor employees were struck and killed in California since Aug. 10. Three workers died in a single Riverside County incident on Sept. 25. Following that crash, the agency ordered construction teams and contractors to review roadside safety protocols and is forming a committee with industry partners to explore safety technology and possible changes to standards and contracts. California’s Move Over law requires drivers approaching stationary vehicles with flashing warning lights to change lanes when safe or slow down.
