SNAP Soda Limits Expected Across 12 States
Virginia’s SNAP restriction begins Nov. 1, barring purchases of regular, diet and zero-sugar soda, carbonated energy drinks, and other carbonated beverages with at least five grams of added sugar per serving; some sugary drinks, including lemonade and iced tea, remain eligible. Nutrition experts question the distinction, noting that carbonation itself is not the main health concern and that some permitted drinks can contain similar amounts of sugar. Virginia is among four states scheduled to start restrictions that day, joining eight states where limits are already in effect; the specific items restricted vary by state. Kansas is scheduled to begin restricting candy and soft drinks in February 2027. Separately, a federal court vacated the approvals for restrictions in Colorado, Iowa, Tennessee and West Virginia, so those bans are not being enforced under the waivers.
