Solidigm weighs first US NAND factory in upstate New York

Reuters reported on Sept. 18, 2026, citing three people familiar with the matter, that Solidigm, SK hynix's U.S. NAND flash subsidiary, is considering a U.S. manufacturing plant, with upstate New York a leading candidate. The project would be separate from SK hynix-Intel Ohio facility talks and would be Solidigm's first U.S. site; its sole NAND fab is in Dalian, China. SK hynix said Solidigm is reviewing various options to strengthen its business competitiveness but no specific plans have been confirmed at this time, and said currently no matters have been finalized on the Intel Ohio discussions. SK hynix shares closed up 6.4% in Seoul and the KOSPI rose 2.7%. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has threatened tariffs up to 100% on Korean and Taiwanese chipmakers absent U.S. production commitments; Korea pledged $350 billion in U.S. investment last year in exchange for lower tariffs. President Lee Jae-myung said Friday Seoul would seek to "protect Korea's national interests while respecting the views of businesses" and that "This remains a contentious issue." Sources said no agreement has been reached, with key details still under discussion amid higher U.S. manufacturing costs and ongoing Washington-Seoul trade talks. Solidigm was established in 2021 after SK hynix acquired Intel's NAND and SSD business for $9 billion in 2020.
