SOM proposes domed Bears stadium in Bridgeport
Chicago architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill has proposed a domed Bears stadium in Bridgeport, contingent on the White Sox relocating from Rate Field to a potential South Loop ballpark. The concept makes the stadium the centerpiece of a mixed-use district with housing, entertainment, hotels, parks and public recreation, using nearby CTA and Metra service, the Dan Ryan Expressway and existing parking. The firm says surrounding publicly owned land could support affordable and market-rate housing and civic amenities, though the proposal would require further planning. The Bears have not endorsed the concept and have said they are focused on a stadium in Hammond, Indiana; Arlington Heights also remains under consideration as Illinois officials seek to keep the team in the state.
