Sony, Alamo Drafthouse Plan Dome and ArcLight Revival
Sony Pictures Entertainment, in partnership with Alamo Drafthouse, announced plans to restore and reopen Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome by early 2028, about six years after its COVID-era closure. The geodesic Dome will keep its Cinerama branding and exterior, and will feature its immersive 70mm-capable curved screen while not offering in-theater dining to preserve the traditional experience. The adjacent 14-screen ArcLight Hollywood complex is set to reopen under Alamo Drafthouse with dine-in services and curated programming. Restoration is scheduled to begin next month, with upgrades to formats including 35mm, 70mm, and 4K laser projection. The Dome is positioned as a West Coast flagship for Alamo Drafthouse and Sony, focusing on repertory screenings, premieres, and filmmaker series. Industry observers view the revival as a landmark restoration for a beloved Los Angeles venue that has been shuttered since 2020.
