Southstar plans $575M Lone Star Brewery redevelopment

San Antonio’s growth is taking shape through new development, major infrastructure plans and efforts to retain the benefits of expansion locally. On the South Side, Texas A&M–San Antonio is helping attract residents, employers and services, with a university sociologist noting that much nearby growth is on undeveloped land rather than displacing established neighborhoods, while emphasizing the importance of preserving the area’s cultural identity. Separately, Southstar has proposed a $575 million, 57-acre redevelopment of the former Lone Star Brewery and nearby industrial sites, with more than 1,500 housing units, retail and hotel space, parks and restored historic buildings; the plan seeks public support for infrastructure improvements. City leaders’ priorities for the next legislative session include defending local control of CPS Energy and the water system, seeking support for downtown’s Project Marvel, funding flood infrastructure and advancing the South Texas Parkway. These local efforts come amid broader projections that Texas growth will increasingly concentrate in its largest metro areas, including San Antonio.
