Spain High-Speed Crash Kills at Least 50
A Renfe AVE train struck the rear of an Iryo train near Urda in Spain’s Toledo province on October 28, derailing carriages, some of which fell down an embankment. The latest reports put the death toll at at least 50 and the number of injured at about 179, though figures remained provisional as rescue operations continued. The two trains were carrying a reported 544 passengers in total. Authorities have not established why the Iryo train was stopped or the precise sequence of events, and Adif is investigating. High-speed service between Madrid and Andalusia was suspended, while emergency teams responded at the scene and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed condolences to victims and their families.
