Spartanburg Guitar Teacher Gets 90 Days Jail on Weekends in Sex Case
John Foster Jr., 78, a former Spartanburg County guitar instructor, was sentenced after pleading guilty to criminal sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. He received a 10-year sentence, with all but 90 days suspended; he will serve the jail time on weekends and remain on weekday home detention, with five years of probation. Foster must register as a sex offender, wear GPS monitoring and have no contact with the victim or the victim’s family. Authorities said the case began after a teenager reported being sexually assaulted during music lessons, and investigators uncovered child sexual abuse material. Prosecutors said the victim and parents had hoped for more jail time but were satisfied that Foster admitted guilt.
