Illinois opened its season with a 42-23 home win over UAB despite being outgained and losing time of possession, relying on efficient big plays and a resilient defensive stand. Quarterback Katin Houser, making his Illini debut, completed 13 of 17 passes for 182 yards with three touchdown passes and no turnovers, while also adding a rushing score and connecting early with Collin Dixon. The Illini swung momentum late in the first half on an improbable Houser-to-Ty Robinson Hail Mary at the halftime horn, then scored quickly again after halftime to pull away. Defensively, Illinois limited UAB’s red-zone production to field goals and sealed the game with a late interception return for a touchdown. UAB managed 41 minutes of possession and strong yardage, but penalties and missed opportunities prevented a comeback. Illinois’ next game is expected to be a tougher home matchup against Duke.

UAB outgained them by a ton but nine penalties and stalling in the red zone will kill you every time.
That Hail Mary right before half completely flipped the momentum, UAB had no answer after that.
