Former Bears Fullback Matt Suhey Dies at 68

Matt Suhey, the former Chicago Bears fullback and member of the team’s legendary 1985 championship squad, died Sunday at 68, the Bears confirmed. Reports said he died in his sleep, but no cause of death has been disclosed. Suhey spent his entire 10-year NFL career with Chicago after being drafted from Penn State in 1980, appearing in 148 games and serving as Walter Payton’s lead blocker for eight seasons. He finished with 2,946 rushing yards, 20 rushing touchdowns, 2,113 receiving yards, 260 receptions and five receiving touchdowns. Suhey scored the opening touchdown of Super Bowl XX on an 11-yard run, helping Chicago defeat New England 46-10 for the franchise’s only Super Bowl championship.
