Clippers Accept NBA Penalties, End Legal Challenge

Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer said the organization will comply with NBA penalties stemming from an investigation into salary-cap circumvention involving Kawhi Leonard’s endorsement opportunities, ending the team’s planned legal challenge. The sanctions include a $30 million fine, which the team has paid; the forfeiture of five first-round picks from 2029 through 2033; and suspensions of one year for Ballmer and executive Gillian Zucker and six months for Lawrence Frank. Leonard was fined $700,000 but was not suspended, and his contract was not voided. Ballmer apologized to Clippers fans, employees and fellow NBA owners, while saying he still disputes aspects of the league’s findings. The NBA dispute is effectively closed, though a reported federal criminal investigation into the team’s dealings remains separate.
