Taj Gibson Retires, Joins Bulls Coaching Staff

Taj Gibson has retired from the NBA after a 17-season career and will join the Chicago Bulls as an assistant coach under new head coach Tiago Splitter. Drafted 26th overall by Chicago in 2009, Gibson became a fan favorite through his energetic, versatile defense and veteran leadership before playing for seven other teams. He appeared in 1,012 games and finished with career averages of 8.3 points and 5.7 rebounds, most recently playing 10 games for the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2025-26 season. Gibson said his retirement marks the beginning of a new chapter rather than a goodbye to basketball. His experience is expected to provide leadership to a Bulls team that has missed the playoffs in four consecutive seasons.
