West Virginia Upsets No. 25 Virginia 38-27

West Virginia improved to 3-0 with a 38-27 upset of No. 25 Virginia in the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, earning its first victory over a ranked nonconference opponent since 2021. Transfer quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. accounted for 313 total yards and five touchdowns, completing 10 of 17 passes for 190 yards and two scores while rushing for 123 yards and three touchdowns. D.J. Epps caught both touchdown passes for 92 yards on three receptions, while Cam Cook rushed for 123 yards as West Virginia produced more than 430 total yards. Virginia opened with an early lead and twice tied the game, but West Virginia’s defense limited the Cavaliers to 27 yards across three consecutive drives after halftime. A late 38-yard completion to Jaden Bray set up Hawkins’ decisive touchdown run, while Virginia’s missed 41-yard field-goal attempt and a late sack ended its comeback hopes. Virginia fell to 2-1 ahead of its October conference opener.
