Bailey Addresses Fumble in Vanderbilt Loss

NC State quarterback CJ Bailey said he was trying to run out the clock and protect a 31-28 lead when he fumbled in the end zone with one second remaining, allowing Vanderbilt to recover and score the game-winning touchdown in a 35-31 upset. Bailey accepted responsibility but said the situation was new to him, adding that coaches, teammates and family have supported him as he moves on. He threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns, and coach Dave Doeren said NC State would not have scored 31 points without Bailey’s performance. Doeren said the plan was for Bailey to roll out, avoid contact and fall in the end zone before a deep squib kick. Vanderbilt linebacker Miles Capers said the Commodores unexpectedly used a field-goal-block alignment, pressured Bailey and forced the fumble that sparked the comeback. NC State will try to rebound against Appalachian State before returning to ACC play against Louisville.
