NC State Ex-Trainer Arrested, Faces 32 Charges

Former N.C. State sports medicine director Robert Murphy Jr. was arrested in Florida on North Carolina warrants after a grand jury indicted him on nine felony counts involving sexual contact or penetration under the pretext of medical treatment and 23 misdemeanor sexual-battery counts. More than 30 former male athletes have accused him of sexual abuse during treatment, including inappropriate touching during massages and intrusive observation during drug tests; Murphy denies the allegations, and his attorneys say the accusations are false. He is being held in Florida as authorities await the next steps in returning him to North Carolina to face the charges. Murphy led the university’s sports medicine program from 2012 until he resigned in 2022 amid an internal investigation. A judge dismissed the athletes’ civil lawsuit against Murphy and university officials in June on procedural grounds, including the statute of limitations, and the plaintiffs have appealed.
