Illinois Parts Ways With Defensive Coordinator Hauck After Four Games

Illinois parted ways with defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck on September 27, 2026, after four games following a 42-19 loss to No. 7 Ohio State. Coach Bret Bielema said Hauck reached out early that morning to meet ahead of their planned time and they mutually agreed a change in leadership was best for the defense. Bielema thanked Hauck and said they have a plan to move forward being communicated to staff and players. Hauck said he enjoyed working with Bielema, appreciated the opportunity, and wished Illinois luck. The defense ranked 101st in scoring defense at 26.5 points per game and 111th in total defense at 391 yards per game. Jeremiah Smith had 12 catches, 217 yards and four touchdowns for Ohio State, which gained 518 total yards; Illinois had nine players on the field for a late touchdown. Bielema called that moment 100 percent on him. Illinois is 2-2, has three sacks, ranks 109th in tackles for loss and forced two turnovers.
