Vikings beat Buccaneers 23-16; Jefferson, Mayfield injured

The Minnesota Vikings beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-16, improving to 3-0 while Tampa Bay fell to 0-3 for the first time since 2014. Myles Price's 86-yard punt-return touchdown and Kyler Murray's 41-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Addison built the lead. Murray finished 15 of 29 for 168 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Baker Mayfield completed 17 of 34 for 217 yards with one touchdown and one interception while taking six sacks. Mayfield hurt his thumb on a fourth-and-13 desperation pass intercepted by Andrew Van Ginkel, screaming in pain on the ground before walking off clutching his throwing hand; coach Todd Bowles called it a dislocated thumb and rookie Jalon Daniels replaced him. Justin Jefferson injured his right ankle in the first quarter when a defender fell on it, visited the blue medical tent, tried to run and jump on the sideline, then went to the locker room and was ruled out mid-third quarter. Kevin Seifert of ESPN reported "Justin Jefferson (ankle) is now OUT" and later "Vikings TE Josh Oliver (arm) is OUT." An 85-yard Chris Godwin Jr. touchdown catch was negated by a Luke Goedeke holding penalty. Will Reichard's late field goals sealed it. Left-rated outlets led on Jefferson's exit; the single center-rated piece led on Mayfield's departure. No right-rated coverage was in the set.
