Anthony Davis delays Wizards extension decision until after 2026-27 season

Anthony Davis said at Wizards media day on September 28, 2026, that he will wait until after the 2026-27 season to decide on an extension. "[I'll decide] when the season is over. We're going to go through the season and try to do what I do at a high level," he told reporters. "And then when it's over, sit down and have those conversations again with front office." He is eligible for a four-year, $275 million max extension, will earn $58 million this season, and holds a 2027-28 player option on his three-year, $175 million deal. Davis is 33. Washington got him from Dallas in February 2026; a hand injury kept him out the rest of that season. The Wizards drafted AJ Dybantsa first overall, extended Trae Young for four years and $212.8 million, and added Khris Middleton and Deandre Ayton. Davis said they aim to change the narrative of Wizards games as nights when "guys stay up a little later and kind of mess around the game." Will Dawkins said recently that Davis is in a great frame of mind, focused and ready to start the season, very much a motivated player, and that he would expect AD to remind the basketball world who he really is. The team has not won more than 18 games in any of the past three seasons and has not made the playoffs since 2021. Contested: The 2027-28 player option is reported as $62 million in some accounts and $62.8 million in others. Both sides will assess the season before revisiting his future.
