Fa’avae, defense lead New Mexico over UTEP 61-7

New Mexico routed UTEP 61-7, opening Mountain West play 1-0 for the first time since 2018 as its defense forced five turnovers. Sophomore quarterback Toa Fa’avae completed 15 of 19 passes for 249 yards and three touchdowns, building on his first game as the Lobos’ full-time starter the week before. Once a little-known option in a multi-quarterback rotation, Fa’avae earned the job in part for his running ability and is expected to keep developing as a passer while the team works to limit the hits he takes. UTEP managed 135 rushing yards from its quarterbacks, including an 86-yard touchdown, but threw three interceptions.
