Martínez Criticizes Manchester United Leadership After Defeat
CONTESTED Rated outlets do not disagree on the 2-0 score, the red-card timing, or the wording of Martínez's quotes. Carrick has not said what, if anything, will be done about the interview. Manchester United lost 2-0 to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League after Pablo Barrios scored inside the first minute. Leny Yoro was sent off in the 74th minute for a foul on Jonathan David, and Ademola Lookman scored in the 79th. The defeat extended United's winless run to five matches. United have three points in the Champions League league phase, after a 4-0 opening win over Sabah FK, and are 13th in the Premier League. Defender Lisandro Martínez told Amazon Prime's Gabriel Clarke the night was "really poor" and "a reflection of the mirror of how is our club at the moment." He said it is easy to blame the coach or players "but also we have to see other areas," and that he expects more investment "100%" from technical director Jason Wilcox. He defended manager Michael Carrick, said players must do more, and argued the club cannot keep changing managers without looking at other areas. United won 12 of 17 under Carrick last season; this summer they signed Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and free-transfer goalkeeper Karl Darlow, and have won only twice in all competitions this season. Carrick said he had not seen the interview, had half-heard about it, called the remarks "a little bit the emotions of the game," and said he needed to find out more before deciding whether anything would be done. He declined further comment, said he did not understand Yoro's red card, and praised the players' effort.
