Tigers reportedly hire Maldonado as quality-control coach
The Detroit Tigers are weighing several ways to reshape the club after a 76-86 season. They have signed left-hander Nick Raquet to a two-year minor-league deal, a longer-term gamble because Tommy John surgery is expected to sideline him for all of 2027, with a possible contribution in 2028. Detroit is also reportedly hiring former catcher Martín Maldonado as quality-control coach, reuniting him with manager A.J. Hinch and adding a coach familiar with pitcher Framber Valdez. Separately, the Tigers could consider Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. in free agency as they look to fill a potential vacancy at second base and add speed and power, though his 2026 offense fell short of his prior-season production.
