Celtics Blow 22-Point Lead in Season-Opening Loss
Boston opened the 2026–27 NBA season with a 121–113 loss to Detroit after surrendering a 22-point lead, including a 23–0 Pistons run in the fourth quarter—the largest opening-day comeback in the play-by-play era. Paul George scored 38 points in his Celtics debut, setting a franchise record for points in a debut. Jayson Tatum, returning after a season interrupted by a ruptured Achilles, went 6-of-23 from the field and missed all seven three-point attempts, but recorded 11 assists. Tatum said he needs to play better and make quicker decisions as he works back into his scoring role; Detroit, led by Cade Cunningham and strong defense on Tatum, spoiled Boston’s promising start.
