Gomez Nets 51-Meter Premier League Goal Against Palace
Diego Gómez scored from 51 meters in the seventh minute of Sunday's Brighton match against Crystal Palace after receiving the ball from Oliver Boscagli following a turnover by Adam Wharton. He spotted goalkeeper Walter Benítez off his line and sent the ball over him into the net, making the score 2-0 after Jaydee Canvot's own goal had opened the scoring. Yasin Ayari added a third three minutes later, and Charalampos Kostoulas scored a fourth in the 49th minute. Opta listed Gómez's effort as the Premier League's longest-range goal since Wayne Rooney scored from 58 meters for Everton against West Ham in November 2017. The finish was Gómez's first goal of the season and added to two assists already this campaign. He joined Brighton from Inter Miami in January and has 12 goals in 66 appearances. Brighton became the ninth Premier League team to score three goals within a ten-minute span, the first since Newcastle against Tottenham in April 2023. NBC Sports Soccer wrote "WHAT AN INSANE GOLAZO FROM HALF FIELD BY DIEGO GÓMEZ!" as the clip circulated. No disputes on the distance, scorers, or sequence appear in the record.
