Lakers Begin Season Without LeBron James

The Lakers began the 2026–27 season without LeBron James, with Luka Dončić taking on the role of franchise leader and promising a championship push. Coach JJ Redick shares that ambition, citing the team’s talent, depth and fit around Dončić, Austin Reaves and new center Walker Kessler, although questions remain about whether the roster is ready to contend. Los Angeles is counting on Reaves and Kessler to deliver consistent production and availability, while Dončić’s health and leadership will be important over a full season. The offense has potential, but perimeter defense remains a concern, especially when opponents target Dončić and Reaves; Kessler’s rim protection cannot fix every point-of-attack breakdown. The Lakers opened against Golden State after a 53-win season and first-round playoff victory, facing an experienced opponent in a matchup that offered little preseason indication of how the teams would fare at full strength.
