No. 13 Notre Dame opened its 2026-27 women’s basketball season in Rome with a 99-75 win over Villanova in the Eternal City Tip-Off doubleheader. Senior Hannah Hidalgo led Notre Dame with 32 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, while sophomore Leah Macy scored 27 in her debut after missing last season with a knee injury; Villanova’s Jasmin Bascoe had 26 points. The teams and fans met Pope Leo XIV the day before the game. Notre Dame is seeking another deep NCAA Tournament run as Hidalgo pursues further individual honors. Elsewhere, USC is targeting a national title with JuJu Watkins returning from an ACL injury, and Tennessee plans to build its offense around frequent three-point shooting.
