Sovereignty Wins $7 Million Breeders’ Cup Classic
Sovereignty won the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland by 1¾ lengths over The Puma, after illness kept him out of the race last year. The 4-year-old Godolphin homebred was ridden by Junior Alvarado and trained by Bill Mott; Knightsbridge finished third and defending champion Forever Young placed fifth. The victory adds the Classic to Sovereignty’s major wins, including the 2025 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, and makes him a contender for a second consecutive Horse of the Year title. Godolphin is expected to retire him to stud; he has earned more than $10.5 million.
